How to Perform Umrah: A Step-by-Step Guide
Umrah is made up of a few well-defined rites, and understanding them in advance brings calm and focus to the journey. This guide explains each step in order. On the ground, our guides support you throughout, so you are never unsure of what comes next.
Step 1: Enter the state of ihram
Before reaching the miqat (the boundary where ihram begins), you make the intention for Umrah and enter ihram. Men wear the two white cloths; women wear modest everyday clothing. From this point, certain actions such as cutting hair, using scent and arguing are avoided. Pilgrims recite the Talbiyah as they travel toward Makkah.
Step 2: Perform Tawaf
On reaching Masjid al-Haram, you perform Tawaf: circling the Kaaba seven times in a counter-clockwise direction, beginning and ending at the Black Stone corner. Each circuit is an act of devotion, and many pilgrims make personal dua throughout. After Tawaf, you pray two rak'ahs, ideally near the Maqam Ibrahim.
Step 3: Drink Zamzam and proceed to Sa'i
After Tawaf it is recommended to drink Zamzam water. You then move to the area between the hills of Safa and Marwah to begin Sa'i.
Step 4: Perform Sa'i
Sa'i is walking seven times between Safa and Marwah, commemorating Hajar's search for water for her son Ismail. The distance is covered along an air-conditioned indoor path today, making it manageable for most pilgrims. It begins at Safa and ends at Marwah.
Step 5: Trim or shave the hair
Umrah is completed by trimming the hair (men may shave; women trim a small length). At this point the state of ihram ends and its restrictions lift. Many pilgrims describe this moment as deeply emotional. To prepare fully, read our first-time pilgrim's guide and packing list.
